Newark, N.J.— Newark Beth Israel
Medical Center will be the host of the 2009 Celebrating Newark --
Partners in Progress awards dinner, a special event
designed to reflect on the efforts of those individuals and institutions
that have dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to the city of Newark
and its future. Hosted by Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and
Children’s Hospital of New Jersey, affiliates of the Saint
Barnabas Health Care System, the event will be held on Thursday,
April 30 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
Among the distinguished honorees this year is Stephen N. Adubato,
Sr., one of the most respected leaders in the non-profit
community in the city of Newark who has been a political force
in Newark’s renaissance and will be receiving the 2009
Community Award. “As a civic leader and founder of
the North Ward Center, a non-profit community development organization
that delivers quality services in Newark and Essex County, Mr.
Adubato has created an anchor for Newark and the surrounding
areas,” says John A. Brennan, MD, Executive Director of
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital
of New Jersey. A special feature of the evening will be Emmy-Award
winning PBS Anchor Steve Adubato, PhD, son of Mr. Adubato,
Sr., who will serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.
For nearly 40 years the North Ward Center has been pivotal in
strengthening the community by creating educational opportunities
for Newark residents, bolstering the health and well being of families
and improving the quality of life. The organization has been dedicated
to creating fiscally responsible programs that are the building
blocks for an economically viable community, including the North
Ward Center Child Development Center, Casa Israel, the Newark Business
Training Institute and the Robert Treat Academy. Under Mr. Adubato’s
leadership, these unique programs provide a nurturing and welcoming
environment where learning and caring are the first priority.
In addition to Mr. Adubato, Partners in Progress will honor
the Newark Alliance, a nonprofit organization, with the 2009
Corporate Award. Founded 10 years ago, the Newark Alliance,
the vision of a group of business leaders committed to supporting
Newark’s rebirth, has been pivotal in helping the state’s
largest city reach its full potential. Envisioning Newark as a
center for business, performing arts, sports, entertainment and
education, the Newark Alliance has worked tirelessly to propel
the next generation of growth in the city.
Through key initiatives, the Newark Alliance works in partnership
to make Newark a better, safer place to work, live, learn, play
and do business. Among the organizations key projects are Opportunity
Newark focusing on economic development, and Workforce Innovation
in Regional Economic Development (WIRED), a grant funded program
to transform the regional economy. The Alliance also serves as
a coordinating resource for the Newark Public School District to
support the improvement of public education in the city, and is
active in advocacy, support and public safety initiatives that
help in job creation, business growth, education and crime reduction
throughout the city.
Frederick B. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.P., and his daughter, Alice
J. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.P., will have the distinguished
honor of receiving the 2009 Medical Award. The father-daughter
oncology team has exemplified the finest qualities in medicine
through their commitment to equality in medical care regardless
of race, ethnic background, language, income or insurance status.
In 1965, Dr. Frederick Cohen, along with the late Dr. Jack
York, was instrumental in bringing cancer care to New Jersey at
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and has often been referred to
as the “Father of Cancer Treatment in New Jersey.” Under
his guidance, the Center, now named in his honor, has become a
state-of-the art cancer treatment facility, offering the
most advanced cancer services for diagnosis and treatment of all
types of cancer, and one of only four state-designated
Hemophilia Treatment Centers.
Dr. Alice Cohen, Director of the Division of Hematology
and Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center oversees the
Frederick B. Cohen, MD, Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders
Center and provides oversight for all related clinical trials offering
the latest treatments. The Center offers TomoTherapy, the latest
technology available for the treatment of cancer which optimizes
the delivery of radiation, allowing for higher doses delivered
to tumors with greater safety.
Dr. Cohen has been pivotal in reaching out to community groups
and private physicians regarding the importance of screening, education
and treatment in the fight against cancer. As a result of her leadership
and that of her father, countless underserved and uninsured women
in Newark and the surrounding communities have benefited from breast
cancer screenings and the highest standard of breast health care
at the Center.
“Our Partners in Progress have invested in all aspects
of the revitalization of Newark, have enriched the lives of countless
individuals and positioned the city for future growth,” comments
Dr. Brennan. “We are proud to recognize their outstanding
accomplishments and call them our friends.”
