Two Westfield Senior High School Students Make Donations to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center

Newark, NJ - Two students from Westfield High School created a more comforting environment for premature and ailing newborns at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The students, Ellen Straus and Arielle Ziering, sewed thirty covers for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s infant isolettes.

When their English class required a senior project of community service, the two students decided to help premature infants. A relative had a premature baby and they hoped to help other families with similar experiences. They received assistance coordinating the project from their English teacher, Darren Finkel, as well as large discounts from Rahway Discount Fabric Warehouse, Rahway, and Babies R Us in Union.

“We chose Newark Beth after researching hospitals in our area,” says Ms. Straus.  “The NICU has a lot of patient referrals and helps many families.”

The students raised more than $500 from family and friends to purchase fabric to create the colorful covers. The extra money was used to purchase bouncy seats, rattles, mobiles, crib mirrors and other items. All of the gifts were delivered to the NICU at The Beth on June 5.

“We were delighted to receive the generous donation from these remarkable high school students,” says Diane Marconi, RN, Developmental Director of the NICU at CHNJ at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. “Babies in the NICU greatly benefit from the isolette covers, which help to control light and sound and enhance rest.”
