Breastfeeding Your Baby

Breastfeeding Education & Support at Saint Barnabas Medical CenterSaint Barnabas Medical Center wants to encourage and support you with breastfeeding your child. Prior to your delivery, Breastfeeding Basics is a workshop designed to help mothers achieve the confidence and skills necessary for a satisfying nursing experience.

Breast Pump Rental and Sales

When you deliver, you can take comfort in knowing that all of the nurses on the mother/baby units are specially trained lactation specialists with years of experience.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your nurse for assistance while you are in the hospital.

A daily breastfeeding education class is also led by a certified lactation consultant (an announcement will be made regarding time and location).

In addition, the Women’s Health Education Office sells and rents breast pumps and supplies and provides instruction on using and caring for the equipment. For more information, please call 973-322-5360 or visit their office off the lobby of the third floor of the main hospital. They are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Help Once You are Home
If you are having difficulty with breastfeeding once you have left the hospital, you can call the Saint Barnabas Warm Line (973-322-5684). The Warm Line is a dedicated phone line that is monitored by certified lactation consultants. It is designed for non-emergent breastfeeding questions that can be answered during regular business hours. If you have a question, day or night, call the Warm Line and leave a confidential message and phone number. A lactation consultant will return your call during the next business day. If you have an emergent breastfeeding question, please contact your child’s pediatrician. Saint Barnabas Medical Center offers the Parent Review, a free email newsletter discussing pregnancy and the first year of your child’s life. In addition to the regular newsletter, there is a special newsletter that focuses on breastfeeding.

Women’s Health Education offers Breastfeeding Basics before delivery as well as a six-week breastfeeding support group for women who have delivered their baby at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Registration is required. For more information or to register for either program call 973-322-5360.
