Daily Activities: Dos and Don'ts

1. Always face your work. Bend at the hips and knees, not at the waist.

2. Keep back straight and buttocks tucked under when lifting objects from a higher surface. Also, hold/carry object closer to your center of gravity (waist) to lessen strain on the back.

3. Hold and carry objects close to you. If load is heavy, divide it into separate containers and make more than one trip as needed.

4. Never bend over without bending knees and tucking buttocks under.

6. When facing your work area, turn by pivoting your feet first, rather than your waist.

7. When standing over sink, stand close and bend knees slightly. If cabinet is located under the sink, open cabinet doors and rest one foot on the bottom floor of the cabinet. Alternate feet as needed.

8. When vacuuming, keep knees slightly bent, buttocks tucked under and avoid giant steps.

9. When sitting on the toilet, lean back and relax with feet on a small stool so knees remain higher than hips.
