A Guide to Exercise and Wellness in Pregnancy
*The following information is provided as general guidelines
for exercise and wellness during and after pregnancy and may
not be suitable for all individuals. Check with your physician
before initiating any exercise program.
Pregnancy is undoubtedly an intense experience and the
positive impact exercise has on enhancing pregnancy is well
documented. Physical activity during the prenatal and postpartum
period provides a woman with a sense of physical, psychological
and emotional well being, which can profoundly influence
her experience.
Research has shown that exercise, when performed under specific
guidelines, is safe for both the expectant mother and her unborn
child. A comprehensive exercise and education program should
address both fitness, and the physical changes that take place
in a woman’s body during pregnancy. Such changes include
hormonal relaxation of tendons and ligaments, a change in
the center of gravity, weakening of the abdominal and pelvic
floor musculature, increased risk of arch strain and calf cramps,
as well as numerous cardiovascular and respiratory alterations.
These changes all effect the pregnant woman’s ability to
exercise safely.
Ideally, a woman should not begin an exercise program for the
first time during pregnancy. However, those who have participated
in exercise prior to pregnancy can continue to exercise at a
modified level. Always check with you obstetrician before starting
an exercise program because he/she is the best guide for the
level of exercise permitted for you. The following information
includes guidelines, recommendations and resources to help make
your pregnancy the best experience possible.
