RELAXATION
Relaxation is an important tool that can be used not only during
pregnancy and childbirth, but also for life. Relaxation is the
active concentration on freeing the mind and body from tension.
It enables one to feel better by reducing the physical discomforts
of pregnancy and allows one to be more “in touch” with
their own body. These skills are important during labor and delivery
because tense muscles may impede progress and may make labor
and birth more difficult and painful.
How to begin:
- Choose a quiet environment free from
distraction.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Get into a well-supported body position,
either semi-sitting or side-lying with body parts supported
using pillows as necessary.
- Consciously ask your body to “let
go,” trying to experience the sensation of relaxed muscles
as tension leaves each body part.
- Let your eyes close and feel them
as heavy lidded. Listen to the sound of your own breathing
and with each breath out, actively relax a little more.
