Chair of the Perinatal Review Committee at
Saint Barnabas Medical Center
For the past 11 years, Stephen Crane, M.D., attending obstetrician/
gynecologist at Saint Barnabas, has been the chairman of the
Perinatal Review Committee at Saint Barnabas. The group, which
was created in the 1980s, oversees the activity of the Labor
and Delivery Unit and the newborn nurseries.
The committee is staffed by 17 physicians, representing
both obstetrics and pediatrics, as well as nurses and a resident.
By coordinating ongoing meetings with professionals from two
medical specialties, the committee helps to ensure continuity
of care for both mothers and newborns.
“It is a cooperative group and a forum for sharing
ideas and concerns,” says Dr. Crane. “We take
pride in creating policies and practices that enhance care
for all of our patients.”
Some results of committee discussion include better monitoring
equipment on the obstetrical floor for pregnant cardiac patients;
Group B Step screening protocols for those in labor, and the
implementation of new equipment to prevent postpartum hemorrhage
after delivery.
Dr. Crane, who completed his residency at Saint Barnabas,
has been a member of the attending staff since 1990. He is
also a member of the Medical Executive Committee, the Department
of OB/GYN Executive Committee, and the OB/GYN Quality Assurance
Committee at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee at
Saint Barnabas Medical Center
For the past 10 years, Catherine Sladowski, M.D., attending
obstetrician/gynecologist at Saint Barnabas, has been the
chair of the Quality Assurance Committee at Saint Barnabas.
The group, which was established 15 years ago, is an objective
forum to insure quality performance within the Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The six-physician committee
reviews any unusual medical cases to ensure that standards
of care established by the American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists (ACOG) have been followed appropriately.
“Our committee is dedicated to keeping medical errors
to a minimum,” says Dr. Sladowski. “We are dealing
with the direct care of patients and it is very vital to maintain
the highest standard of care and to continue Saint Barnabas’ reputation
of excellence in the treatment of women.
Dr. Sladowski, who completed her residency at Saint Barnabas,
has been a member of the attending staff since 1977.
