NEW TECHNOLOGY TO COMBAT EXCESSIVE MENSTRUAL BLEEDING AVAILABLE

Currently one in five women - or 10 million women - suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding, and account for approximately 30 percent of the estimated 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the United States each year.

The Saint Barnabas Women's Center for Gynecological Surgery on Old Short Hills Road in West Orange has recently added a new endometrial ablation technology for the treatment of women suffering from excessive menstrual bleeding due to benign causes.

The new technology, called the NovaSure System, provides an effective and minimally invasive outpatient alternative to hysterectomy, while avoiding the potential side effects and long-term risks of drug therapy. The NovaSure System has been available in Canada and Europe since December of 2000, and recently received FDA approval for use in the United States.

Excessive menstrual bleeding causes women to suffer from fatigue, anemia and emotional stress. Hysterectomy is the most common surgical treatment. The new technology provides an outpatient alternative by removing, or ablating, the endometrial lining of the uterus using radio frequency energy. Since the treatment is done on an outpatient basis, the patient is generally awake during the procedure after receiving a conscious sedation anesthetic. The entire procedure takes approximately 4 1.2 minutes, making it the fastest procedure available on the market today.

Pre-menopausal women with heavy menstrual bleeding who have completed childbearing may be candidates for the procedure. For further information, please call the Saint Barnabas Women's Center for Gynecological Surgery at (973) 322-6200 or ask your physician.
