MICU/Ambulance

MICU paramedic The Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at Saint Barnabas Medical Center is an emergency response unit that augments a first aid squad’s basic life support capabilities with the inclusion of advanced life support therapies. The MICU essentially brings the emergency room to you.

The MICU responds simultaneously with your local First Aid Squad or Fire Department for the following emergencies: chest pain, shortness of breath, severe trauma, diabetic emergencies, unconscious patients, drowning/near drowning and syncope (fainting).

The Saint Barnabas MICU is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by two New Jersey State-Certified Mobile Intensive Care Paramedics. The paramedics will arrive at the scene of an emergency and perform a complete history and physical, initiate the appropriate treatment, and contact the physician at the Emergency Department. Together, they formulate a treatment plan for continued care while en route to the hospital.

MICU staffSaint Barnabas operates two MICUs. One unit provides advanced life support to the residents of Livingston, Roseland, West Orange, South Orange, Short Hills, Millburn, Maplewood and surrounding areas as necessary. The second unit operates in conjunction with The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas, the state’s only Certified Burn Center. The Burn Transport Unit is staffed by two New Jersey State Certified paramedics who are also trained in Advanced Burn Life Support. This unit is dispatched to any hospital in the state that has a critically burned adult or child. The patient is evaluated by the team, and transported to The Burn Center for additional care. The care provided by the team is coordinated with the physician/nursing staff of The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas.
