Special Services Domestic Violence Support The Emergency Department treats individuals who are the victims of domestic violence and will refer them to supportive services. The department uses a specialized Polaroid camera kit called the Injury Documentation Kit to record evidence of domestic and child abuse and assist victims. The high-definition Spectra camera uses a sonar auto-focus and ten-zone lens system that give detailed, full-color photographs instantly. Minute details of injuries are captured with this camera, which is also used by police domestic-affairs officers. The instant pictures can provide documentation to support a legal case against an abuser by providing a history of abuse and reinforcing the physician’s diagnosis. As with all patients, sensitivity and confidentiality are of the utmost concern. Sexual Assault Support Service The Emergency Department provides medical evaluation, treatment and emotional support to individuals who have been raped. Poison Control The Emergency Department is a network affiliate of New Jersey Poison Control. Communication Systems
To assist in communicating with non-English speaking patients, the Medical Center utilizes Cyraphone, a telephone device with dual handsets that allows for confidential, face-to-face communication in over 150 languages. The device accesses an interpreter within minutes and is available around-the-clock. The Medical Center also maintains a Foreign Language Interpreter List of employees who generously give their time to help translate and interpret medical information for patients who do not speak English.
