The Saint Barnabas Medical Center Cystic Fibrosis Center, located at The Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, provides personalized, comprehensive care including evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for our patients from infancy through adulthood. Our philosophy is one of optimism and aggressive management in a caring and supportive environment.

With the availability of advanced medical therapies and diagnostic technology, cystic fibrosis patients are living longer and healthier lives.  Our program provides specialized care for children and adults in one convenient location. For more than 20 years, our goal has been to ensure that at each stage of life our patients have access to comprehensive treatment and the latest research to help them maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center

The Cystic Fibrosis Center is one of 115 centers nationwide to be fully accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding research to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis and improving the quality of life for people with the disease. Attending an accredited center ensures a quality of care. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has established care guidelines used by accredited centers and and provides regular updates regarding new research funding.

Comprehensive Care

Our dedicated team of professionals provides patients with the latest treatment options, compassionate care and thorough management of their health care needs. Our experienced, multidisciplinary team includes pediatric and adult pulmonologists and a cystic fibrosis nurse, social worker, dietician, two respiratory therapists and a research coordinator. You also will meet medical students, residents, fellows and other health care providers who are in training.

To address the unique needs of our patients, our Center also has access to other pediatric and adult subspecialties, including: general and cardiothoracic surgery; radiology, gastroenterology; endocrinology; infectious disease; psychiatry/psychology; ear, nose, and throat; genetics and obstetrics and gynecology.

Saint Barnabas routinely participates in ongoing, multi-center research studies and clinical trials designed to bring new understanding of the disease process, and test new treatment approaches.  Patients may voluntarily choose to participate.

Treatment Approach

The Center provides state-of-the art care to monitor every aspect of the disease. Frequent assessment of lung function and nutritional status help facilitate earlier intervention and prevent small problems from becoming bigger.

To help maintain the best quality of life, regular follow-up care is vital.  In following the clinical practice guidelines recommended by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, every three months, patients at Saint Barnabas receive:

  • A history and physical to maintain health and monitor symptoms
  • Pulmonary function tests to monitor lung function
  • Sputum or throat cultures to assess what organisms are growing in the respiratory tract
  • A consultation with our multidisciplinary team to discuss any ongoing problems and review the current plan of treatment

In addition, each year our patients receive:

  • A chest x-ray to help monitor any changes in the lungs and airways
  • Complete pulmonary function tests to monitor lung function
  • Extensive blood work
  • A nutritional evaluation by a registered dietician to review diet and weight gain, as both are vital to promoting strong lung function
  • Emotional support and counseling services from a Social Worker in addition to help with practical issues (such as insurance, employment and support services)

Treatment for Adult Patients

Because adult patients have their own unique issues, our health care team includes a pulmonologist who specializes in the care of adults with Cystic Fibrosis.  Our team works closely to ensure our patients have an easy, gradual transition which meets their maturing medical and lifestyle needs. In fact, routine care and procedures continue to be performed at The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center.  This is good news as research shows that maintaining a continuity of care from a pediatric to an adult program helps produce better patient outcomes.
