Stroke is a medical emergency. If you think you or a person with you is having a stroke, immediately call 911 for an ambulance and transport you to the hospital. Do not wait to see if symptoms go away. When a stroke occurs, every minute matters Each year, more than 750,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke making it the third leading cause of death and the primary cause of adult disability. Prompt treatment makes a big difference in outcome. Stroke symptoms may be minimized and possibly reversed if treatment is delivered early. Clot-busting drugs delivered within the first three hours may be effective in limiting the debilitating effects of stroke. Patients must recognize the warning signs -- a sudden onset of weakness and/or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, or trouble walking -- and call 911 immediately. The Stroke Center at Saint Barnabas, under the leadership of a board certified stroke neurologist, has a specialized acute team of professionals who specialize in the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke. The Stroke Center at Saint Barnabas offers comprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art care.
