Saint Barnabas Opens New State-of-the-Art
"As a vital link between the sick or injured and the Medical Center, the Emergency Department provides critical support for every specialty program at Saint Barnabas," says James McEnrue, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Saint Barnabas. "This includes the new cardiac program, the state's only certified Burn Center, the Valerie Fund Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and all others." The new design incorporates specific service areas: Critical Care, Pediatric Care, Adult Medical/Surgical, Triage and Fast Track. These areas have specialized suites that allow the hospital's board-certified emergency physicians, nurses, technicians and support personnel to provide the best in emergency health care to the more than 50,000 patients treated each year. The Critical Care Suite offers the latest technology found in an intensive care unit. The self-contained Pediatric Suite contains nine private, child-friendly patient rooms and a pediatric critical care room. The suite's reception area includes a play facility for young patients and siblings. The Medical/Surgical Suite contains its own nurses' station to provide immediate access to its suite patients. The Triage Suite has been expanded to provide patients with faster assessment and reduced waiting times. The Fast Track Suite includes its own dedicated admission area and six reatment bays to enable quick diagnosis, treatment and release of non-critical patients. In April, Saint Barnabas held a Grand Opening in the Emergency Department to showcase the newly renovated facility. To meet the needs of its vastly increasing patient population, the Medical Center constructed a $5.5 million state-of-the-art Emergency Department that adds 6,000 square feet, nearly doubling the department's former size and increasing capacity from 23 to 40 beds.
