Volunteers Needed for Osteoporosis Research Studies The Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Center at the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center in Livingston is conducting several osteoporosis research studies this fall. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by a severe decrease in bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue. This condition can lead to increased fractures, pain, disability and even death. Currently, there are 10 million people in the United States with osteoporosis and an additional 18 million people with low bone density who are at a high risk for developing the disease. Over 80 percent are women, but men are also affected. If you are a man or woman age 65 or older who is concerned about All studies will involve the use of FDA-approved medication and/ or vitamin supplements. Medications and laboratory tests will be provided by the study at no cost, and study participants will receive a stipend for travel expenses.
