Chairman, Saint Barnabas Medical Center
President and Chief Executive Officer, Saint Barnabas Health Care System

Our state is home to innumerable caring communities that embrace the diversity of its residents. Communities are our gathering places; they provide us with a sense of belonging within our neighborhoods, businesses, and schools.

Saint Barnabas Health Care System has made a commitment to reassess the needs of the regions it serves and design and implement outreach programs that fill those needs. For example, a Saint Barnabas Health Care System physician and staff travel in a pediatric mobile van to urban neighborhoods to provide health care to children at risk. Burn educators are visiting schools, community groups and businesses throughout the state to promote burn prevention. And a unique program for adolescent girls and their mothers is helping to bridge the generation gap.

The Saint Barnabas Health Care System is proud to bring a variety of health and education programs to the heart of communities throughout New Jersey.

The hands of a surgeon can reset broken bones, remove diseased organs, repair or replace many parts of the body. Surgery can transform patients and return them to health. In a way, each procedure is a miracle of modern medicine, a tribute to how far the field has developed.

In this issue of Family Health Magazine, we celebrate surgery in all its forms, as well as the surgeons who so competently perform them. At Saint Barnabas, the Department of Surgery is comprised of 16 surgical, diagnostic and support sections for a full range of complete to minimally invasive procedures.

Also in this issue, we discuss sleep disorders. Without a good night’s rest, many Americans are suffering from sleep deprivation or poor quality of sleep. The new Kazmir Center for Sleep Disorders at Saint Barnabas Medical Center will help to address a variety of sleep problems for residents of our communities. We could all benefit from a pleasant slumber.

I wish you all a healthy and safe summer.
