Saint Barnabas Cancer Specialist Receives New Jersey Hospice Award LIVINGSTON, NJ -- Jane M. Kanowitz, M.D., a medical oncologist at The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas, was announced the recipient of the New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's Spirit of Hospice Award as Attending Physician of the Year. On staff at Saint Barnabas Medical Center for the last seven years, Dr. Kanowitz, was selected for exemplifying "the spirit and work of hospice in patient/family services, in administration and in the community." The New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NJHPCO) was established in 1979 and represents 37 New Jersey hospices that care for more than 14,000 patients and families. NJHPCO provides numerous programs and services in the state to help terminally ill patients. Among them are to provide referrals to physicians, patients and families; to provide education to hospice employees; and to educate public policy makers, the media, and insurers on important issues affecting hospice care. The organization also works cooperatively with numerous caregiving and medical organizations throughout the state. Dr. Kanowitz received her medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. She completed her internship and residency at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, also in New York. Her special interests lie in breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, head and neck cancers, lung cancers and gynecologic malignancies. She has published numerous articles related to treatments of solid tumors and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Metropolitan Breast Group and American Society of Breast Disease.
