Children are encouraged to create inspirational cards or homemade crafts that will promote positive encouragement for those diagnosed with breast cancer. Items should be sent to Jill Kaplan, Coordinator of Cancer Support Programs, The Cancer Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, 94 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. All items should be mailed no later then September 26, 2003, as they will be distributed throughout the month of October.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has played a pivotal role in increasing the awareness of breast cancer among women in the United States. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was implemented in October 1985, and quickly became identifiable with the help of its logo – a pink ribbon. The campaign stresses the importance of early detection and the significant role it can play in saving lives. It is estimated that approximately 203,500 cases of breast cancer will be detected and diagnosed in the United States in the year 2003. As the number of women being diagnosed with breast cancer is steadily rising, so are efforts to increase awareness of breast cancer. It is essential that woman make every effort to detect breast cancer as early as possible by having annual mammograms, clinical breast examinations, and by performing breast self-examinations. The good news is that although breast cancer is the leading cancer among women ages 40-59, survivorship is at an all-time high. Today, there are nearly two million breast cancer survivors.

Saint Barnabas is committed to providing all aspects of care for women with breast cancer. The Breast Center at the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center continues to perform more mammograms than any other facility in the metropolitan area. In addition, The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas treats among the highest number of patients with breast cancer in the state. Throughout October, the Saint Barnabas Breast Center and Cancer Center will host numerous free events in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
