Saint Barnabas Nephrologist Appointed President of the New Jersey Transplant Society

Luigi Bonomini, M.D., Ph.DLuigi Bonomini, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director of Pancreas Transplantation at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, has been appointed President of the New Jersey Transplant Society. The New Jersey Transplant Society is dedicated to the advancement of transplantation within the state and is comprised of physicians and other medical professionals involved in organ transplantation.

Dr. Bonomini brings extensive professional training and leadership to his new position. He has been at Saint Barnabas Medical Center since 1996 and in that time has overseen the expansion of the hospital’s pancreas transplant program. To add to the hospital’s simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplant program, he introduced pancreas after kidney transplantation in the 2000.

Dr. Bonomini received both his medical degree and Ph.D. from the University of Parma, Italy. His Ph.D. was received in collaboration with The Institute of Metabolic Research at the University City Science Center of Philadelphia, an affiliate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He completed his residency and fellowship at Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y. Dr. Bonomini is double board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, among them, the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Nephrology, the New York & New Jersey Society of Nephrology, and the Italian Medical Society. He is also the author of numerous professional journal articles.

The New Jersey Transplant Society is a forum for sharing information and insights amongst New Jersey’s transplant physicians, nurses, coordinators and other transplant support staff. The Society sponsors lectures by prominent local and national figures in transplantation.

New Jersey’s certified transplant centers offer kidney, pancreas, heart and/or liver transplantation in six hospitals in the state, two of which are in the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. Saint Barnabas Medical Center offers both kidney and pancreas transplantation; Newark Beth Israel Medical Center provides both kidney and heart transplantation.
