The Cancer Centers of Saint Barnabas To Hold a Program for Couples Facing Cancer

A Journey Together – Help for Couples Facing Cancer

Livingston, N.J. --Upon receiving a diagnosis of cancer, many women look to their husband or significant other for comfort and support during and after treatment. But even partners with the best intentions often find it difficult to know exactly how to react.

To offer help for those trying to figure out how to be the best caregivers for their loved ones, The Cancer Centers of Saint Barnabas Medical Center will present a special program on Monday, October 17, 2005, titled A Journey Together – Help for Couples Facing Cancer.

The program will feature journalist Marc Silver who is the author of How To Help Your Wife (and Yourself) During Diagnosis, Treatment and Beyond. He is an editor at U.S. News & World Report where he has been the longtime contributor to the News You Can Use section. His wife, Marsha, was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago, and after undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments, she is in good health.

Mr. Silver readily admits he fell into an abyss of ignorance when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Join him and others as they help couples learn how to successfully navigate through this challenging experience. Speakers will take an informative and often humorous approach to topics such as gender differences in communication, intimacy, and how to be a better caregiver.

The free program will be held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Monday, October 17, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Islami Auditorium at Saint Barnabas, located at 94 Old Short Hills Road in Livingston, N.J. Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer is invited to attend, but is asked to pre-register by October 12, 2005, calling 973-322-8405. Free parking and refreshments will be provided.

Date: September 9, 2005
