Saint Barnabas Health Care System Named One of the
Best Employers For Workers Over 50

West Orange, N.J. --AARP recently named the Saint Barnabas Health Care System one of the “Best Employers for Workers Over 50.” AARP, a non-profit organization that promotes improving life for people over 50, selected SBHCS after evaluating the System’s recruitment practices, continuing opportunities for advancement, flexible work schedules and benefits for current and retired employees.

“We constantly strive to create a culture in which our commitment to employee satisfaction never waivers,” said SBHCS President and CEO Ronald J. Del Mauro. “We are honored to have been recognized by AARP and even more so that our employees are so satisfied and know that they are valued.”

In addition to an extensive benefits package and 401K option, SBHCS offers employees a variety of on- and off-site services ranging from financial planning to shoe repair. “Before I was 50, Saint Barnabas services such as child care helped me balance work and raising my kids,” said Sari Kaplon, M.B.A., R.N., C.N.A., vice president of Patient Care Services at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and a Saint Barnabas employee of 23 years. “Now that I’m 50, SBHCS still continues to support my career and home life by affording me the same services and more.”

The System also encourages employees to take advantage of the many educational and training opportunities available on-site, online and at participating colleges and universities. “I’ve worked in this field for 32 years and I have never worked at another establishment that offered these kinds of leadership and educational training programs,” said Larry Casteline, director of Respiratory Care Services at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an affiliate of SBHCS. “These programs are actually designed by the System to help improve the skills of management.”

Training opportunities are also available for employees looking to transfer jobs or departments within the System. “I’ve worked in every area except for the operating room,” said Kathy Melnick, B.A., C.C.R.N., in her 26th year at Union Hospital, an SBHCS affiliate. “There are as many opportunities available here as you wish to pursue.”

Saint Barnabas also offers a variety of flexible work options including Per Diem employment in nursing. Per Diem not only allows nurses to work schedules that accommodate their lifestyle, but ensure patients a continuum of care from a stable nursing staff. The System has 1457 nurses as Per Diem, 320 of which are over the age of 50.

In her 19 years at Ashbrook Long Term Care and Rehabilitation Center, Millie Meigs, R.N., spent 10 years as a Per Diem nurse. “Working keeps you up to date and keeps your mind active, which helps a lot,” she said. Though she retired from nursing at the age of 80, Millie continues to volunteer at Ashbrook.

A reception for the honorees will take place on September 22 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. The 2005 “Best Employers for Workers Over 50” will also appear in AARP The Magazine.

The Saint Barnabas Health Care System is New Jersey’s largest integrated health care delivery system. The System includes more than 22,000 employees (second largest private employer in the state), 4,750 physicians (one-fourth of the state’s practicing physicians) and 443 residents who provide treatment and services for more than two million patients annually: 225,000 inpatients and same day surgery patients, 450,000 Emergency Department patients and over 1.5 million outpatients, and 17,500 births.
