Saint Barnabas Sleep Center Receives National Accreditation Livingston, N.J. - The Kazmir Center for Sleep Disorders at Saint Barnabas Medical Center recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for meeting rigorous standards in all areas of operation, including patient services and employee qualifications. "It is an honor to have our program receive accreditation," said Mangala Nadkarni, M.D., Medical Director of The Kazmir Center for Sleep Disorders at Saint Barnabas. "It is truly a reflection of our goal to provide the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders." According to Dr. Nadkarni, who has been studying sleep disorders for more than 12 years, about half of the population experiences sleep disorders at some point in their life. Nationally, research says 40 percent of Americans have difficulty sleeping a few times per week. While there are many sleep disorders that can have adverse effects on one's health, Dr. Nadkarni explains that her patients generally complain of experiencing insomnia, being too tired during the day, talking or walking in their sleep, and interruptions in their regular sleep cycle. A poor quality of sleep is known to have serious consequences. It can lead to memory problems, manifest as a mood disorder and result in motor vehicle accidents. People who have problems sleeping are more likely to have heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure that is difficult to treat, as well as concentration and behavioral problems. In order to receive a five-year accreditation, a center must meet or exceed all standards for professional quality health care as designated by the AASM. The Center at Saint Barnabas underwent a detailed inspection of its facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility's goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves. Accreditation from AASM ensures patients a standard of high-quality care. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorder centers and labs, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine heath care, education and research. The Kazmir Center for Sleep Disorders at Saint Barnabas offers a full range of services used in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of sleep-related disorders in adults and children. The Center is equipped with the latest in monitoring equipment, providing the opportunity for daytime testing and full overnight sleep studies.
