Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation Reminds Homeowners to Replace Smoke Detector Batteries When Resetting Clocks

After setting clocks back one hour on Sunday, October 29, 2006, to mark the end of Daylight Savings Time, The Burn Center and Burn Foundation at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, urge homeowners to take a few extra minutes to change the batteries in household smoke detectors.

“It only takes a minute and should be done twice a year, each time you change your clock,” said Lisa Jones, Community Educator for the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation.

The Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation remains committed to spreading its message of prevention and safety to citizens throughout the state. With two full-time educators, the Foundation annually reaches more than 35,000 individuals ranging in age from pre-school children to senior citizens.

“We know the majority of all burn injuries can be prevented,” said Ms. Jones. “And we know that working smoke detectors save lives.”

To keep you and your family safe, and help you get out safely in case of a house fire, Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation offers the following tips:

  • Install smoke detectors on each level of your home
  • Put a smoke detector in children’s bedrooms
  • Test smoke detectors at least twice a year
  • Keep smoke detectors free of dust and dirt
  • Replace smoke detectors according to manufacturer's directions
  • Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family
