Saint Barnabas Medical Center Program to Address Sudden Death in Young Athletes

Livingston, N.J. - As a result of growing media attention of sudden cardiac death in young athletes and the recent death of a teenage basketball player in Chatham, N.J., Saint Barnabas Medical Center will present “Sudden Death in Young Athletes – Detection & Prevention” on Monday, December 4, 2006.

This free program is open to the public and will provide parents, school administrators, school nurses, athletic coaches and health care professionals with valuable information regarding the causes, prevention and emergency treatment of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

Despite public perception to the contrary, sudden death in young athletes is extremely rare. It most commonly occurs in male athletes, who have estimated death rates nearly five times greater than the rates of female athletes.

“In athletes less than 35 years of age, this catastrophic event typically occurs during or shortly after training or competition,” reports Deborah Friedman, M.D., Chairperson, Department of Pediatrics at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and a board-certified pediatric cardiologist. “This suggests that intense physical exertion is a precipitating factor.”

Dr. Friedman, along with Sabino Torre, M.D., Director of Interventional Cardiology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and a board-certified cardiologist, have developed an informative educational program on the detection of risk factors for and prevention of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. They will also discuss recommended cardiac screening for high school and collegiate athletes and emergency treatment and use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs).

This program will be held on Monday, December 4, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Islami Auditorium at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, 94 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, N.J. The program is free, but pre-registration is required by calling
1-888-SBHS-123.
