SAINT BARNABAS INVITES OUR COMMUNITIES TO:
‘THE HEART SPEAKS: ARE YOU LISTENING?’

FEATURING CARDIOLOGIST AND AUTHOR MIMI GUARNERI, M.D.

Every day, 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease and, despite remarkable intervention and surgical procedures, over 650,000 new heart attacks occur annually.

Drawing on her experiences as a renowned board-certified cardiologist and founder and medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in California,Mimi Guarneri, M.D., FACC, will present an informative program on the use of integrative and holistic medicine in preventing cardiovascular disease on Thursday, February 8, 2007, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Islami Auditorium of Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Members of the community are invited to hear Dr. Guarneri present, “The Heart Speaks: Are You Listening?” She will address risk factors for cardiovascular disease; how holistic integrative treatment is key to disease prevention; and the role of nutrition, exercise and supplements in cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. Dr. Guarneri will also share ground-breaking new research on the heart as a multilayered, complex organ, and explain how healing the heart can have more to do with healing the mind and soul than has been recognized.

The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Moderators Gary J. Rogal, M.D., Chief of Cardiology, Saint Barnabas Health Care System; and Adam Perlman, M.D., Medical Director of the Saint Barnabas Siegler Center for Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Guarneri is board certified in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, and holistic medicine. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from New York University and her medical degree from SUNY Medical Center in New York, where she graduated first in her class. She served her internship and residency at Cornell Medical Center where she became chief medical resident. She served cardiology fellowships at both NYU Medical Center and Scripps Clinic and as an attending in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic where she placed thousands of coronary stents.

Dr. Guarneri is the author of numerous articles that have appeared in such journals as the Annals of Internal Medicine and the Journal of Echocardiology. She has been nominated for the Bravewell Award in IM Leadership and honored by the American Heart Association. She is the author of “The Heart Speaks”, a poignant collection of stories from cardiac patients who have benefited from integrative medicine approaches. She lives in La Jolla, California.
