Verona, NJ - On Friday, February 9th through Sunday, February 11th the Verona Rescue Squad and the Saint Barnabas Health Care System will host its second annual Surface Ice Rescue Technician courses to help prevent cold-weather drowning deaths and alleviate injuries sustained by rescuers. The courses are taught by a professional dive and water rescue company from New York that trains, tests, and certifies rescuers as “Surface Ice Technicians.”

Saturday, February 10th at 4p.m. and Sunday February 11th at 10a.m., responders will participate in live exercises and training in the lake at Verona Park located on Bloomfield Ave. and Lakeside Ave. This training will take place in the frigid water and simulate various rescue scenarios in both day light and darkness. Responders will practice several rescue methods, rescue multiple victims, as well as victims far from the shore.

The press and public are invited to observe the lake activities on Saturday evening and Sunday morning at the Lake in Verona Park. This promises to be an impressive display of the skill and dedication of local emergency response personnel. Photos and questions are welcome. The point of contact for this event is Lieutenant Ryan S. McCormick. (Information above)

The weekend will consist of two separate courses running simultaneously, Surface Ice Rescue I and Surface Ice Rescue II with the live demonstration in Verona Park as a part of the class. Last year over 50 responders attended the training in Verona. This year, more than 60 responders total will attend the two courses.

Every year throughout New Jersey and the United States thin ice presents an inviting danger to children and adults alike. Cold water drowning is a preventable tragedy. Attempted rescues result in a number of injuries to would-be rescuers. Emergency Response Personnel properly trained and equipped for ice rescue can prevent many of these injuries and deaths. Over the past three years the Verona Rescue Squad located in the town of Verona, Essex County, New Jersey has made Ice Rescue Training a winter priority.

The Verona Rescue Squad serves the Emergency Medical Service Ambulance and Heavy Rescue needs of the town of Verona and offers assistance to surrounding towns whenever possible. The squad was formed in 1927 and is currently comprised of approximately 50 volunteers. All the members are volunteers and are trained in important specialties such as Emergency Medical Technicians, Rescue Technicians and other areas. The squad is always looking for new members looking to serve the community. For more information visit: http://www.veronarescuesquad.homestead.com/vrs.html.
