Former Burn Patient, Giving Back by Riding in Pedaling for Prevention: The Anti-Burn Ride

Second Annual Bike-a-thon to be held Sunday, June 22, 2008

Livingston, NJ - On March 30, 2006, Jessie Safarik, of Roxbury New Jersey, had an unexpected fall that changed her life. While working in a restaurant, she slipped and fell causing her arm to plunge into a pot of hot chicken soup. With an arm full of second and third degree burns, she was transported to The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center where she spent 28 days including her 21st birthday. For the next year, Jessie needed intense physical therapy and attended an outpatient program at the hospital.  Her life has changed.  Simple things like blow drying her hair have become difficult.

But that doesn’t stop Jessie’s determination when faced with a chance to give back to the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation and The Burn Center. When Jessie heard about the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation event, Pedaling for Prevention: The Anti-Burn Ride, she jumped at the opportunity to raise money for The Burn Center as it has made such a difference in her life.  Last year, she raised $600 for the center.  This year, she started early by mailing letters to friends and family.  Her father and boyfriend will accompany her as she rides to support The Burn Center.

Come join Jessie on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Pedaling for Prevention: The Anti Burn Ride.  Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center (SBACC), located at 200 South Livingston Avenue in Livingston (across from the Livingston Mall).

Riders will enjoy a 40-, 25- or 10-mile ride which loops through the scenic Great Swamp Refuge and tree-lines communities of Morris and Somerset Counties. All riders start and finish at the SBACC where there will be a post-race party.  The course is professionally managed and includes rest stops, water, Gatorade and refreshments.  There will also be an on-site bicycle technician to make sure bikes are in the best condition for the ride.

For additional information about the bike ride and to register, please visit The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas website, www.njburncenter.com, or call Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation at 973-322-4210.

The Burn Foundation is the educational, research and fundraising arm of The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.  Since 1987, The Burn Foundation has been providing fire safety and burn prevention education programs to school children, businesses, community organizations, healthcare professionals and fire service personnel across the state. The Burn Foundation is also dedicated to the complete physical and emotional recovery of those affected by a burn injury.
