Saint Barnabas Medical Center Presents Free Education Program: Relief from Lumbar Spinal Stenosis – Finding Your Way Through Treatment Options Livingston, N.J.– Saint Barnabas Medical Center will hold a free educational program for people suffering from the symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Participants will have an opportunity to meet with orthopedic surgeons to learn more about the management and treatment of their disease. The same program will be presented on March 26 from 10 to 11 a.m. by Christopher Zarro, M.D., and on April 7 from 6 to 7 p.m. by Casey Lee, M.D. Both programs will be held in Conference Room A and B at Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, 200 South Orange Avenue in Livingston, N.J. Advanced registration is requested by calling 1-888-SBHS-123 (1-888-724-7123), option #1. According to Dr. Lee, lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is believed to be the most common reason for back surgery in people over the age of 65 in the United States. LSS is a sometimes painful condition caused by a gradual narrowing of the spinal canal. This narrowing of the spinal canal can impinge and put pressure on the nerve roots and spinal cord, causing pain and discomfort. Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, often notice pain in the buttocks or a “pins and needles” sensation in the thigh or leg that occurs when standing (extension) or walking. The discomfort is usually relieved by bending forward (flexion) or with sitting. In some cases, a patient will complain of leg pain and weakness without having any back pain. “Symptoms of LSS often limit self-supporting daily activities, work, social and recreational pursuits, explains Dr. Zarro. Lack of activity can lead to obesity, depression and general physical deterioration.” This educational program will help patients understand their disease and how to manage their condition. LSS patients will understand treatment options including: non-operative therapy, traditional surgery and a new minimally invasive technology.
