Thousands Expected to Celebrate New Jersey Miracles at 9th Annual Miracle Walk

On Sunday, October 4, 2009, at 9 a.m., thousands of grateful Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) graduates, parents, family members and health care providers will gather at Verona Park, Verona, N.J. for the 9th Annual Miracle Walk. The walk will celebrate life and raise money for the 56-bed Saint Barnabas Medical Center NICU. Registration and festivities will begin at 9:00 am and the walk will begin at 10:30 am. As a Level III Regional Perinatal Center, the highest designation attainable, the Saint Barnabas NICU treats more than 1,200 infants annually for prematurity, low birth weight, acute illness, and congenital disorders. The NICU has one of the best infant survival rates among neonatal intensive care units in the nation. In fact, babies that are born at Saint Barnabas Medical Center 17 weeks early have twice the survival rate of those born at other hospital in the Vermont Oxford Network, a group comprised of more than 400 hospitals nationally and internationally.

The walk itself was created by a family in gratitude for the care their daughter received during a three-month stay in the Saint Barnabas NICU. With a team of dedicated parents, they have joined together to organize and participate in this annual walk-a-thon which has raised more than $2.5 million since its inception. Funds raised are used to acquire the most technologically advanced items and equipment available – ensuring NICU babies at Saint Barnabas receive outstanding care and experience as little discomfort as possible.
