Retired Nurses from Saint Barnabas Medical Center LIVINGSTON, N.J. -- She may be as old as the Queen Mother of Britain, but Mary Burke, R.N., of Irvington was willing and eager to join some fellow retired nurses at their biannual luncheon at Charlie Brown’s in Millburn. During this particular gathering, their former colleague, Howard Eisenstodt, M.D., an ophthalmologist with a practice in Millburn was to join them. During the July luncheon, the four nurses and Dr. Eisenstodt chatted about their days in the operating room as well as the latest surgical advances that have become commonplace since their retirement. The group meets with other former Saint Barnabas nurses twice a year and has been doing so for the past seven years. Pat Partridge, R.N., of Morris Plains, a former head nurse of the operating room at Saint Barnabas was on staff when the hospital moved from Newark to Livingston in November 1964, helping to transfer some of the 51 patients from the Newark facility in the process. Like Mary Burke, she contributed 20 years to Saint Barnabas. Olivia Newell, R.N., also of Morris Plains, was not far behind, working from 1963 until 1982, also in the operating room. Peggy Goeckel, R.N., of Chatham, began her career later, and left Saint Barnabas in 1973. Dr. Eisenstodt who has practiced at Saint Barnabas for more than 30 years was honored to join his old friends, recalling they were “crackerjack nurses” in their day.
