Toms River,
NJ -- Summer is a great time to spend days with friends
and family enjoying the outdoors. Barbecues are often an anticipated
event to celebrate the warm weather and sunshine. Some of our
favorite summertime dishes, such as grilled hot dogs and hamburgers,
can increase our waistline and cholesterol levels by the end of the
season.
The
Saint Barnabas Home Health Care Services, which
include local affiliates Community Medical Center Home Health in Toms
River and Community Kare in Lakewood, offer the following tips for heart
healthy barbecues.
- When grilling
red meat choose “round” cuts that are labeled “select.” The
same goes for pork. These cuts have the least fat content.
- Try fish. Many
seafood selections are high in omega 3 fatty acids which are beneficial
to the heart. Trout and salmon are two good selections.
- Avoid dark
meat chicken and remove the skin before grilling. Chicken, turkey
or vegetable burgers/hot dogs are an excellent alternative to their
traditional counterparts.
- Fruits and
vegetables can take on new life on the grill. Try vegetable
kabobs as a side dish or slicing pineapple and grilling until warm
for a delicious dessert.
