Designed
by Saint Barnabas cardiac specialists, the Playing With Heart
program reaches out to youth sports athletic directors, parents,
coaches and young athletes through regularly scheduled education
sessions and cardiac screening events. The Program includes
preliminary cardiac testing to young athletes ages 12 to
17 in all competitive sports.
The goals are simple: to raise awareness of the problem
of sudden cardiac arrest and to help identify players who
may require further testing or intervention to help prevent
it. All testing and medical examinations are conducted by
Saint Barnabas cardiac and sports medicine physicians. The
program also follows the recommendations of the American
Heart Association guidelines for screening young athletes.
While the Playing With Heart program alone cannot prevent
sudden cardiac death from occurring, it is an important first
step in helping to identify those athletes most at risk.
