HOW IT WORKS

The Playing With Heart Program takes a pro-active approach to a devastating problem through two key methods:

Raising Awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest1) Raising Awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Young Athletes.

Information sessions led by Saint Barnabas Health Care System affiliates throughout the state to call attention to the problem and the importance of cardiac screening for young players.

Parents, coaches, and youth athletic directors learn about the causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes, and receive important information, including health history forms to be completed by parents and athletes prior to the program’s cardiac screening and evaluation.

2) Preliminary Cardiac Screening Events Statewide.

The American Heart Association suggests that a complete and careful personal and family history and physical examination are the best ways to identify young players at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

The Playing With Heart program holds cardiac screening events that make it easy and convenient for young athletes to be evaluated. In addition to physical examination of young athletes by Saint Barnabas cardiologists, the program provides EKG testing and immediate results interpretation to players and their parents or guardians at each screening event. If initial results identify a need for further testing, players will be referred to appropriate specialists, as needed.
