Welcome to
the Department of Radiology (continued)
Most of the credit for our
success should go to those dedicated people on the front lines, the 94
technologists, 13 nurses and 69 clerical staff that make up the heart
of the department.
Credit is also due to our 20
subspecialist radiologists who have joined Saint Barnabas from the
finest programs in the country. We are very proud of the tradition of
quality in our department and very excited about the newest members of
our physician team who will carry on that tradition. (To read about
their credentials, please click on Our
Staff.) The
department also manages a highly respected radiology residency program
that places residents in excellent fellowships throughout the country.
Thanks to a firm commitment from the
Saint Barnabas leadership, the Department of Radiology has had the
opportunity to acquire new, state-of-the-art technology that has kept
our range of capabilities equal to any major university. In 2000, we
saw the addition of new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
and positron emission tomography (PET)
scanners. This is one of many steps taken to ensure Saint Barnabas’
place in the forefront of radiologic technology.
Other initiatives include being one of
the first community hospitals to embrace PACS (Picture Archiving and
Communication System) as a way to store and distribute images, as well
as the only New Jersey hospital that has completely converted to voice
recognition technology. Voice
recognition eliminates the time lag caused by typing in order to get
results to the referring doctor within hours rather than days. We are
also presently testing a Web-based system that will allow physicians
to see their patient’s images immediately in their office or home.
The modern radiologist is very active
in patient care. From evaluation of breast disease to performance of
biopsies, drainages and placement of central venous access lines, our
radiologic specialists contribute toward improved medical care as well
as decreased length of stay for the hospitalized patient. With
technology that grows more sophisticated and powerful each year, we
have the ability to diagnose and treat more diseases than ever before.
We will continuously work on developing
our web site to encompass all of the areas of radiology offered at
Saint Barnabas. For now, if you do not see a service listed but would
like additional information, please forward your query to info@sbhcs.com.
Thank you and good health to you and your loved ones.
Sincerely,
Alan J. Garten, M.D.
Chairman, Department of Radiology
