The Saint Barnabas Heart Centers and the Saint
Barnabas Health Care System Nursing and Rehabilitation
Centers provide integrated post-acute cardiac services
that meet the needs of cardiac patients who require
continued therapies prior to returning home. Each
of the Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers is committed
to providing a full array of quality post-hospital
care programs that utilize the same standards and
protocols for post-acute cardiac patients as the
Saint Barnabas Heart Centers.
“The integration of cardiac services with
those in the System’s acute-care facilities
allows us to further extend the continuum of care
offered by the Saint Barnabas Health Care System
while ensuring each patient receives the highest
quality of care,” describes Paul Dell’Aquila,
MD, Medical Director for the Saint Barnabas Nursing
and Rehabilitation Centers and Assisted Living
Residences. “These services also allow us
to further develop our alignment with physicians
by expanding the post-acute options available to
their patients following an acute stay for a cardiac
condition.”
The Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers’ post-acute
cardiac care program incorporates advanced therapies
and practices to assist patients recovering from
post coronary bypass surgery, intracoronary revascularization,
stable angina pectoris, and post valve replacement
surgery. A specialized program is also available
for patients with congestive heart failure, to
assist them in effectively managing their symptoms
and maintaining a high quality of life.
We are also very proud to announce the introduction
of services for patients with a Post-Acute Left
Ventricular Assistive Device (LVAD) at Clara Maass
Continuing Care Center at Belleville, adds Dr.
Dell’Aqulia. The LVAD Program, developed
through a collaboration with the Saint Barnabas
Heart Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center,
provides LVAD patients with comprehensive therapies
by specially trained clinical staff. The
goal for each patient is to attain independence
and autonomy in activities of daily living while
maintaining safe practices with regard to the Post-Acute
Left Ventricular Assist System – including
complete understanding of the Device and its function,
bathing techniques, and maintenance of quality
of life.
Each cardiac service is offered in an environment
equipped to handle all facets of post-acute care. “Services
such as tracheotomy care, patient controlled analgesia,
TPN, IV Therapy, wound care, and pain management
are provided to ensure the needs of individuals with
a variety of medical complexities are met,” explains
Cathy Gallo, RN, Vice President of Long-Term Care
Corporate Standards and Clinical Services, for the
Saint Barnabas Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers
and Assisted Living Residences. “The ability
to handle medically complex patients, combined with
a highly trained rehabilitation team and clinical
integration with the Saint Barnabas Heart Centers,
creates an environment that gives physicians confidence
that the transition from an acute-care facility to
a post-acute environment will be seamless for both
themselves and their cardiac patients.”
