Cardiac Services

Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratories

The full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac procedures is performed at our technologically advanced invasive cardiovascular laboratories. These procedures include cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty, coronary stenting, atherectomy, biopsies, electrophysiology studies, arrhythmia ablations, and defibrillator and pacemaker insertions and extractions including biventricular pacemakers. One of the nine suites is dedicated to pediatric catheterization procedures. The Invasive Laboratories and the state-of-the-art Pacemaker and Defibrillator Evaluation Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center are the largest such facilities in the State of New Jersey.

Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratories

Our full-service non-invasive laboratories provide echocardiography, stress testing, cardiopulmonary function testing and ambulatory 24-hour electrocardiogram monitoring (Holter) services. Patients benefit from the most advanced modalities of echocardiography services, including conventional echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography with bicycle, treadmill exercise or pharmacological agents, and color Doppler echocardiography.

The Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratories provide digital echocardiography laboratories which are accessible by physicians’ via web site from office or home. Benefits of digital echocardiography include superior quality of cardiac ultrasound images which translate into greater diagnostic accuracy, easy and universal accessibility, and better communication between primary and specialist physicians.

Also available are contrast echocardiography which can further enhance the accuracy for evaluation of heart structure and function, and can provide data regarding myocardial blood supply or cardiac perfusion. Contrast echocardiogram using gas-coded human albumin may eventually become aalternative method to replace traditional radioactive agent such as thallium for myocardial perfusion study. The contrast echocardiogram avoids using a radioactive agent. It also is more convenient for patients. The echocardiography takes only 30 to 45 minutes; traditional nuclear myocardial perfusion study usually takes several hours to complete two separate scans of the heart after injecting 201thallium.

Electrophysiology

Our advanced cardiac electrophysiology services provide evaluation and management of heart rhythm problems including complex arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.

The evaluation may include a simple recording of the heart rhythm, or invasive studies using catheters. Management ranges from the use of medications, pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) or curative procedures (catheter ablation).

Cardiac MRI

Use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming very important in the diagnosis and management of heart disease. MRI offers physicians a close look at both the structures and function of the heart and major vessels quickly and thoroughly, without the risks associated with invasive procedures.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation refers to comprehensive activities that help patients improve their quality of life, lessen cardiac symptoms, increase functional capacity of the heart and reduce the risk of future heart disease. Our highly effective cardiac rehabilitation programs include medical evaluation, exercise prescription, education and behavioral counseling. Individualized programs are designed by the patient, physician and rehabilitation team.

Integrative Cardiac Wellness

The Integrative Cardiac Wellness Program combines state-of-the-art medical technology with the healing therapies of complementary medicine. This approach to cardiac care is designed to expand the treatment options for individuals coping with cardiac disease. It includes cardiac wellness education and recommendations for lifestyle modification and integrative therapies. Integrative therapies are aimed at enhancing the body’s natural healing abilities and supporting patients mentally and emotionally before, during and after cardiac surgery.
