The trend in heart surgery is toward minimally invasive
techniques that reduce surgical trauma along with the associated
risks and complications. Significant advancements in surgical
instrumentation have led to the use of smaller incisions
for a variety of cardiac
catheterization procedures. Our goal is to return patients
to functional levels as soon as possible after cardiothoracic
surgery.
Saint Barnabas Heart Centers have been on the forefront
of minimally invasive cardiac surgery in New Jersey. Newark
Beth Israel Medical Center was the first in New Jersey to
use robotic surgery to close holes (ASD) in the heart and
to repair defective heart valves.
Instead of the traditional splitting of the chest bone,
valves are replaced or repaired through a small incision
between the ribs. The same incision can be used for closing
atrial septal defects and tricuspid valve procedures. While
aortic valve patients are less likely to have their valve
repaired, valves can be easily replaced through a small incision.
