The Saint Barnabas Heart Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical
Center now offers advanced heart failure treatment services
in Berkeley Heights, NJ, on the new campus of Summit Medical
Group. The new satellite office, conveniently located off
Route 78 in Union County, increases access to the most advanced
treatments for heart failure to New Jersey residents. The
office will be staffed by Mark J. Zucker, MD, JD, Director
of the Heart Failure Treatment and Transplant Program at
Newark Beth Israel, and a nurse practitioner who will offer
on-site consultation for patients referred for highly specialized
cardiac care.
“The Saint Barnabas Heart Center at Newark
Beth Israel Medical Center is proud to expand access to care
that will improve the health and quality of life for the
people of New Jersey,” said Ronald J. Del Mauro, President
and Chief Executive Officer of the Saint Barnabas Health
Care System.
“We’re pleased to have the skills of Dr. Zucker
and his team, together with our expertise in cardiac imaging,
including Cardiac MRI, Echocardiography, and 64-slice coronary
CT angiography, right here on our Berkeley Heights campus,” commented
Robert Slama, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Summit Medical Group.
Newark Beth Israel’s Heart Failure Treatment and Transplant
Program provides the most advanced treatment options available
for congestive heart failure. For individuals who require
intensive treatment, but are not candidates for heart transplantation,
the program offers participation in cutting-edge research
studies and clinical trials. Its reputation as a Center of
Excellence has made the Saint Barnabas Heart Center at Newark
Beth Israel Medical Center a principle site for numerous
investigational trials that offer patients the benefit of
the next generation of pharmaceutical agents and mechanical
assist devices that serve as a bridge to transplant or destination
therapy. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center was the first
on the East coast to implant the DeBakey assist device and
is the only center in the state chosen to participate in
the HeartMate II, Jarvik 2000, and VentrAssist LVAD trials.
Newark Beth Israel’s heart transplantation program
ranked among the nation’s top ten programs by volume
for the last three years. Short- and long-term survival
rates continually surpassed both regional and national benchmarks
and patients often spend less time waiting for a heart transplant
in New Jersey than candidates elsewhere in the country.
