Cancer Support Groups
Dealing with cancer or caring for a loved one
with cancer can be both emotionally and physically draining. That’s why many
patients benefit from support they get from those who are bonded by the same
fears, concerns and sorrow.
No one knows better what a patient or family
member is going through than someone who has had or is having the same
experience. Connecting with a person or persons with whom you can freely discuss
your fears, pain and side effects of treatment can help tremendously. At Clara
Maass Medical Center Cancer, three ongoing cancer support groups offer
assistance: Cancer, Caregivers
Strength Through Caring, and Breast Cancer.
Caregivers Support
Group
The Caregivers Strength Through Caring Support
Group was started to address the needs of those who are dealing with the many
emotions associated with caring for someone with cancer. Sponsored in part by
the Oncology Education Society and Ortho Biotech, the group’s purpose is
twofold: to discuss symptom management and to touch on varying psychosocial
issues.
According to Raylene Langish, R.N., oncology
nurse educator who moderates the group, the group serves as an important vehicle
for people to vent their anger, frustration, and even guilt. “Besides being
educational this group provides an open and confidential environment for people
to express their feelings,” Raylene says.
Emphasis is not only placed on how to care for a
loved one with cancer but also on how caregivers should care for themselves.
Participants are encouraged to keep a journal of their feelings and to treat
themselves to something special at least once a week.
The Caregivers Support Group meets once a month
in the 3 South Annex Solarium of the Medical Center. For times or for more
information, call Raylene Langish at 450-2332.
New Cancer Support
Group
Clara Maass has started a support group for
patients undergoing treatment for various types of cancer and their families.
The group meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Medical
Center’s 3 South Solarium, and a light dinner is included.
The group is led by Rosalyn Dilligard, RN, OCN, the nurse manager of
Oncology Services, who has 20 years of experience in oncology nursing and case
management.
The purpose of the group is to provide support
and educational material relating to cancer treatment. Guest speakers will be
featured at each meeting and meetings may include discussions led by the
American Cancer Society, pharmacy and chaplains at the hospital. Anyone wishing
more information can call (973) 450- 2332.
Breast Cancer
Support
Clara Maass Medical Center is dedicated to breast
health awareness and breast cancer support.
A free support group targets those with breast cancer and those affected
by breast cancer.
Featured speakers are announced prior to each
meeting, which takes place the last Monday of the month at 4 p.m. in the
Women’s Health Center Conference Room, located on the ground floor of the
Continuing Care Center. Refreshments
are served and parking is free.
For further information or to register
for a meeting, call Raylene Langish, (973) 450-2332.
The group is sponsored by the Clara Maass Medical Center
Department of Oncology Services.
