Cancer Program and Services at
Saint Barnabas Medical Center
Health care professionals share a common goal: to restore and maintain our patients’ health and quality of life to the greatest extent possible, and to do so with medical excellence and compassion. I have had the privilege to be associated with The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas since its opening and, in that time, have worked with a talented, committed staff unparalleled in its dedication to caring. I have also seen the scope of available services expand tremendously during this time in such areas as psychosocial support and education, so vital to our patients’ well-being; integrative medicine; and the availability of new treatments through our clinical research program.
True to its history, Saint Barnabas is among the largest and busiest cancer facilities in New Jersey, ranked by volume by the Association of Community Cancer Centers. I believe this is a reflection of the resources available through our Oncology Program, both at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Ambulatory Care Center, as well as the commitment of our staff – a commitment not only to continuing professional education in this rapidly changing field, but also to offer truly state-of-the-art medical care with a unique level of personalized attention and caring. I hope you will take moment to peruse our web site to learn a bit about our physicians and about the services The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas can provide.
Sincerely,
Richard
Michaelson, M.D.
Chief
Medical Officer for Oncology
Several components contribute to the healing environment at The Cancer Center:
-
Our Psychosocial Support and Education Programs are among the most extensive in the state. Both individual and group counseling, in person and by phone, is available for patients and their advocates. We also provide stimulating and relevant lecture programs for our patients and members of the community on an ongoing basis.
-
Our board-certified oncologists and subspecialists have extensive training and credentials from prestigious facilities across the country, bringing to Saint Barnabas the best our country has to offer for the clinical research, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. (See Meet Our Medical Oncologists.)
-
Results of surveys on both inpatient and outpatient oncology services attest to a consistently high level of patient satisfaction.
-
Quality nursing care is an integral part of the recovery and healing process. To maximize each patient’s care during hospitalization, dedicated patient floors have been assigned to medical oncology, urology, orthopedics, pediatrics, surgery and women’s surgical diseases. Saint Barnabas is also one of the few institutions in New Jersey to have a dedicated neurosurgical intensive care unit.
