The Saint Barnabas Health Care System is home to three Pediatric
Intensive Care Units (PICUs), including New Jersey’s
largest PICU at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Our PICUs provide comprehensive,
state-of-the-art medical and surgical care 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Each unit is staffed by full-time pediatric
intensivists and pediatric critical care nurses, each certified
in Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Pediatric specialists,
in various medical and surgical specialties, are available
for immediate consultation. The PICU staff is especially
sensitive to the needs of both children and parents. For
example, to help ease the stress that illness and medical
emergencies cause for families, the units provide accommodations
for one parent to remain with their child overnight.
We offer general pediatric
critical care services with all modes of ventilation, including
high frequency ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide. Other
services provided include long-term IV access, such as PIC-lines
or Broviacs, as well as procedural sedation. We sedate children
for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, such as MRIs and
other radiological tests, bone marrow biopsies, endoscopies,
chest tube placement, and other procedures.
Our Pediatric Transport Teams routinely
transport critically ill children from surrounding hospitals
to our PICUs for treatment and care.
