Yes. Overall, 70 percent of children who develop cancer will be cured. It is important to know that there are many forms of cancer in children and the outcome for any individual child varies with the type of cancer, how far the cancer has spread and many other factors which need to be discussed with the physician caring for your child.
The only cure for sickle cell anemia is bone marrow transplantation. Unfortunately, this is not even available for more than 80 percent of our children. In addition, for many children with sickle cell anemia, bone marrow transplantation may not be appropriate because it remains a difficult procedure with many complications. It is important to discuss all options with your doctor.
There are many ways to help. Donations to the Valerie Fund and to many organizations involved with the care and research of childhood cancer are available.
