Special Programs

The Valerie Fund Children's Center has a number of special programs available for our patients and their families.

  • Summer Camp and Misc.:
  • Camp Happy Times, supported by The Valerie Fund organization, provides a free camping experience for a week for children in New Jersey who have cancer.
  • The Valerie Fund, the parent organization, conducts annual Sibling Workshops to help brothers and sisters of the child diagnosed with cancer.
  • Camp Hole-in-the-Wall and Camp Hole-in-the-Woods, in Connecticut and Upstate New York, respectively, provide a camping experience for children with blood disorders, including sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
  • School re-entry Program: Professional School Visits

It can be difficult for children to return to school. School is a critical part of the life of a child and it is important to help them ease into their routine, whether they are returning to school after an initial diagnosis or a long absence. Classmates, not understanding what has happened, can be afraid of catching the disease and can be harsh in ridiculing children who have lost their hair, have undergone disfiguring surgery or have lost weight. Our staff visits the class and helps the children better understand what has happened and also assists the school staff in helping to optimally manage the child's return to school.
